Childcare volunteering abroad is a fantastic way for both experienced and inexperienced volunteers to make a meaningful contribution overseas. There are thousands of organizations that work hard each day to improve the live of young people living on the margins. Often these organizations are severely underfunded and understaffed. As a result, simple assistance with the day to day management of feeding, housing and caring children is sorely needed.
While many childcare volunteer placements are looking for basic assistance that does not require a background or formal training in childcare, there are several placements that are seeking qualified assistance. For example, many orphanages and day care facilities are seeking with a background in early childhood education to assist with developing educational and skill-development programming.
A childcare placement generally is any placement in which the core duties are primarily focused on caring for children. The following are some of the more common types of placements.
Volunteering in an Orphanage
Orphanages are always looking for assistance with managing their daily operations. Childcare volunteers working in an orphanage help with serving meals, changing babies, cleaning and maintenance of the facility, playing with the children and providing educational activities and tutoring assistance.
The placements below outline in detail the specific tasks at several of our orphanage volunteer placements.
Volunteering in a Day Care
When families are struggling to make ends meet they are often forced to place their children in difficult situations. In many countries in which we work, families are left with no choice but to allow their children to fend for themselves during the day while both parents work to find whatever income they can. For parents working in the markets or street vending, children essentially grow up on the streets. This is an incredibly difficult and dangerous place for a young child to be left to fend for themselves.
To help, many day care organizations have been created to provide options for these parents. By providing a free (or nearly free) environment where parents can leave their children while they work, these organizations provide a fantastic service. Naturally, given the need to provide these services for a little as possible, they are often short staffed and in need of help.
Childcare volunteers working in a day care can help serve meals, clean the facility and provide educational games and activities for the children throughout the day. Volunteers with child education experience or training can be of great value in helping to improve or develop educational units for the children.

A teaching student volunteer at the AUTISM AWARENESS CARE AND TRAINNING CENTER (AACT) in Accra will teach Language Development, Art Therapy, Movement Therapy and Drumming Therapy. The depth of care would depend on the student's educational level & flexibility.
